Gingerbread Cookies are the quintessential treat for the holiday season. With their warm spices and soft texture, these cookies fill your home with the cozy aroma of festivities. Whether you’re baking for family, hosting a holiday party, or simply indulging in a nostalgic tradition, gingerbread cookies are a delightful way to celebrate the season. Let’s dive into this simple yet irresistible recipe!
Ingredients You’ll Need
To bake a batch of Gingerbread Cookies gather the following:
For the Gingerbread Cookies:
- Butter: 227g
- Brown Sugar: 200g
- Large Eggs: 1
- Molasses: 340g
- All-Purpose Flour: 750g
- Salt: 5g (1 tsp)
- Baking Soda: 5g (1 tsp)
- Ground Cinnamon: 3.5g (1½ tsp)
- Ground Allspice: 1g (½ tsp)
For the Royal Icing (Optional):
- Brown Sugar: 190g (1½ cups)
- Vanilla Extract: 2.5g (½ tsp)
- Water: (room temperature)
- Salt: Pinch
- Food Coloring: As needed (gel or liquid, optional)
Step-by-Step Directions
1. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Line two baking
sheets with parchment paper.
2. Prepare the Dough:
In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter
and brown sugar until smooth and fluffy, about 1–2 minutes. Add the egg, then mix until well
combined, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed.
3. Incorporate the Dry Ingredients:
Gradually mix in the flour, salt, baking
soda, and spices. Blend until a cohesive dough forms. Transfer the dough onto a large piece of
plastic wrap, shape it into a disc, and wrap it tightly. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours or
overnight for best results.
4. Roll and Cut the Dough:
Roll the chilled dough on a floured surface to
about ¼-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to create festive shapes, then transfer the cookies
to the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between them to prevent sticking.
5. Bake the Cookies:
Bake the cookies for 9–11 minutes, just until the edges
begin to set. Avoid overbaking to keep them soft and tender. Allow the cookies to cool for 5–10
minutes on the baking sheets before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
6. Decorate with Royal Icing:
To make the icing, whisk together sugar,
vanilla extract, corn syrup, and 2 tablespoons of water. Adjust the consistency by adding water
(for a thinner icing) or sugar (for a thicker icing). If desired, divide the icing into bowls
and add food coloring. Use piping bags or a squeeze bottle to decorate the cooled cookies.
